Welcome
-------
Thank you for trying Back Again/2, the first professional-quality
shareware backup software available for OS/2 2.1!
Back Again/2 is a 32-bit backup utility for OS/2 2.1 that fully
supports HPFS, long filenames, and extended attributes as well as
processing files which are currently in use.
All OS/2 logical devices are supported for backup, including but not
limited to Novell Netware, LAN Server, and NFS network drives,
floppy diskette drives, Bernoulli boxes, magneto optical devices,
and more. In short, if you can do a 'DIR' command against your
device, you can back up to it.
For floppy diskettes, Back Again/2 can use a special skewed-sector
format which, when combined with data compression, can backup 3-4MB
per minute on 1.44MB drives. With 2.88MB drives, Back Again/2 can
easily backup 6-8MB per minute!
System Requirements
-------------------
Back Again/2 is designed to operate on machines running IBM OS/2
v2.1 or later.
Back Again/2 does not require anything more than the minimum OS/2
system configuration, although it will run better (faster) when used
on an greater-than-minimum system. This generally means the
following :
Intel 386/25 CPU or greater
6MB memory
VGA display
One 360KB, 1.2MB, 720KB, 1.44MB, or 2.88MB floppy diskette
drive.
New Changes Since v1.00a
-------------------------
- More data compression options
You can now choose to compress data faster or to
compress data smaller to best fit your needs.
- Improved user interface
Tool bar buttons now feature a label to improve ease
of use; the last directory used for hard/lan drive
backups is remembered, window positions and sizes are
now persistant, and more!
- Better Workplace Shell integration
A new folder has been added to the Back Again/2 folder;
each new backup set will appear in this folder allowing
you to start often used backup sets by simply opening this
folder and double clicking the appropriate set!
- Improved speed
Back Again/2 is now up to 50% faster than v1.00a, and
uses less CPU time as well!
- LATE ADDITION: BA2DESK.CMD REXX script
Re-creates the Back Again/2 folder, program icon, etc.
on the OS/2 desktop. Handy if you should need to rebuild
your desktop!
Installing Back Again/2
-----------------------
If you received this software in compressed (.ZIP, .ARJ, etc.) form,
simply run the INSTALL.EXE program from the directory where the
file was uncompressed.
If you received this software on diskette, simply open the Drive A
object (there is usually a shadow on your OS/2 desktop) and then
double-click on the install icon.
Installation is straight forward. The default installation path
is on the system's OS/2 boot drive in a directory called "\BA2".
You may change this to your liking; we recommend that the software
be installed on your OS/2 system partition but it does not have to
be.
You can also have the installation program create a folder with the
Back Again/2 user's guide, this read.me file, and the Back Again/2
program object on the desktop. Additionally, the installation
program can create a shadow of the Back Again/2 program on your
desktop.
By default, the LIBPATH, PATH, and HELP environment variables set
in CONFIG.SYS are updated to include the Back Again/2 directory. You
may uncheck the option if you wish. If the CONFIG.SYS file is
updated, the old CONFIG.SYS file will be renamed CONFIG.BA2.
Configuring Back Again/2
------------------------
You may begin to use Back Again/2 once the installation is
completed. However, for optimal performance, you may want to alter
the default settings in the preferences notebook. For further
information about advanced configuration of Back Again/2, please see
the online user's guide.
Registering Back Again/2
------------------------
We had a difficult time deciding how to distribute Back Again/2.
Initially, we talked about distributing a fully enabled copy as
shareware but after talking to other shareware authors we decided
that we would issue a limited demonstration version of the software
as shareware, with the ability to fully enable it over the
telephone. As a result, Back Again/2 as shipped is limited to
backing up 2MB at a time. No other limitations exist and even with
the 2MB limit, Back Again/2 is still useful for day-to-day backups
of small files.
When you register your copy of Back Again/2 via telephone, we will
give you a code that will fully enable your copy of Back Again/2 for
your use until the permanently enabled version arrives on diskette.
We feel that this is a good comprimise, and we invite your comments.
To register, you may print out and fill in the ORDER.FRM file and
mail it along with your payment to :
